Minister by Night Air Serv Skycap by Day
Marion Barnett loves serving the Lord. Barnett also loves serving passengers at the DFW International Airport as a skycap. For the last 26 years he has been able to balance both interests, keeping himself one of the most active employees in Air Serv.
Since 1974, Marion has worked as a skycap. During his career, he has worked for many companies that held the contract for Delta airlines. In fact, Marion worked for founder Frank Argenbright before the company was sold and now works for Air Serv, which Argenbright started in 2002. "Argenbright and now Air Serv have always allowed me the liberty to pursue my passion for ministry," said Marion. "It is important to me that the company I work for respects me as a person and gives me their blessing to conduct my outside community work."
Barnett graduated from Southwestern Theology Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas with a masters degree in theology. He became the Minister for the Hill Avenue Baptist Church in 1988 and later went on to start the Heavenly Joy Church. He and his 350 church members are actively involved in their community. They canvas the community by knocking door to door to get the word out to children and their parents on ways to stop juvenile crime, preventing the rise in teenage pregnancy, the benefits of staying in school and ways to protect against HIV. They hold meetings every Wednesday night at the church to invite the community to hear speakers from the County Commissioner's Office, the Chief of Police and various health organizations.
Barnett has been named to the Dallas Housing Task Force by former Governor Ann Richards and the Dallas City Council. He has also worked with the Urban Rehabilitation Standard Board, an organizations that focuses on winning public and private grants in order to revitalize areas of the community where vacant buildings had become crack houses.
As a member of the Baptist Ministry Alliance, Barnett has had the opportunity to bring such prominent leaders as Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta King, Ralph David Abernathy and Andrew Young to speak to his church. "Andrew Young was like family," said Barnett. "He and my father were fellow ministers together here in Dallas before he went on to become the Mayor of Atlanta and Ambassador for the United Nations."
Asked why he has worked as a skycap for all these years Barnett said, "I could have held executive jobs but I chose this service type position because it keeps me in front of everyday people and I think that keeps you grounded." Barnett continued, "I like working for Air Serv versus the other companies because management recognizes your efforts when you do your job well."
