Commitment to Excellence -- Elbert Jackson's Memory Honored
ATLANTA (Feb. 3, 2005) -- Elbert Jackson was the perfect employee. After retiring from the US Post Office after 32 years of dedicated service, Elbert was not ready to stop work. He sought a job that was fun, interesting and where he could use his warm and sincere personality to charm and positively influence others. So in 1990, Elbert found the perfect new career - driving an Air Serv bus. For over 14 years, Elbert drove thousands of Delta employees from the Delta employee lot off Camp Creek Parkway near the Atlanta airport to their destinations across the airport.
"You always knew when Elbert was working" remembers Edwin Smith, VP of Transportation for Air Serv. "He brightened everyone's day."
Elbert believed that to make life special, you had to treat every moment special. He carried that philosophy over to his duties at Air Serv. "His broad smile and warm hello was well known around Delta Airlines," Edwin says. "Employees actually waited for Elbert's bus to take them to the concourses. Not a day went by without us hearing some level of compliment on Elbert's positive attitude and demeanor. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word."
In all that time, Elbert never missed a day of work and never had an accident. He was truly committed to excellence.
In May 2004, at the age of 75, Elbert passed away. He left behind a beautiful family: his wife and daughter, both named Cherry. Thanks to her father's influence, Cherry became an internationally known motivational speaker and the author of several books, including Move Out of Your Own Way and 8 Simple Moves to Personal Power. Her latest book , Lessons from Daddy , is a tribute to Elbert and chronicles the valuable insight on life he taught her.
An avid Falcons fan, Elbert followed his hometown football team closely and always purchased season tickets to games. He also taught school in his spare time, expressing his deep desire to give back to younger generations part of the blessings he received in his own life.
In August 2004, Air Serv and Delta Airlines held a special ceremony dedicating Elbert's bus in his honor. The bus was named for him as a lasting tribute to the high level of quality, caring service he provided every day. "I am honored to name this bus after Elbert," noted Frank Argenbright, Air Serv chairman and founder. "He meant so much for so many. We will miss him greatly."
