Dusty Harris Began Work to Assist Ailing Mother,
Now Serves as Account Manager at SLC Airport
SALT LAKE CITY - Dusty Harris was 17 years old and in high school when his mother fell ill and couldn't work. "I had to drop out of high school so I could work to pay the bills and take care of Mom." Now, as Air Serv Corporation's account manager for Delta's mail and cargo operations at Salt Lake City's airport, Dusty reflects back on a seven year career that truly shows that hard work, perseverance and a positive attitude can be the secret of anyone's success.
Dusty got a job at the SLC airport and worked nights for two years so he could get his diploma and be at home during the day to take care of his mother. He plans to go back to school and earn his business degree. Dusty started out as an hourly ramp agent, loading cargo and mail into aircraft. Based on his hard work and can do attitude, he was quickly promoted to supervisor and saw airport cargo operations transition to five companies before the contract was awarded to Air Serv in 2002. During that time, Dusty volunteered to attend development classes that were offered by Delta Ground Services. His initiative paid off and he was soon promoted to senior supervisor for Delta's mail facility and then to manager of cargo and mail operations where he was responsible for 117 employees.
Now, as account manager for our Delta mail and cargo contract, he and his team of 48 Air Serv employees move over three million pounds of freight a month. And they do all of this with one of the best safety records in the company - only one worker's comp injury over the past three years.
Dusty's proudest accomplishment is his career success. "If you're devoted, work hard and keep your employees happy, there's no limit what you can accomplish", Dusty says. "Air Serv is a great company that really takes care of its employees. I never have forgotten where I came from and I do everything I can to stay positive and help motivate my team. They are the ones who make it all happen out here."
Dusty is a single father of his three-year old son, Gage. He enjoys riding his motorcycle and playing with his son. His mother is still ill and is currently awaiting a kidney transplant. Despite his mom's illness, Dusty keeps positive, adding, "I love my Mom, my son and working at the airport. We are all a family out here and I am truly blessed."
