Air Serv participates in the
American Heart Association’s Annual HeartWalk Memphis (September 10, 2005)–
This past week, employees of AirServ along with thousands of other Memphis residents joined together to participate in the American Heart Association’s annual HeartWalk, a three-mile walk through Memphis to help raise money and awareness in the fight against heart and other cardiovascular diseases. In a circular route beginning at the Autozone stadium in Memphis, walkers paraded up Beale Street and the Riverfront in what was in and of itself a sightseeing tour of downtown before ending the walk back at the stadium. Several hundred onlookers cheered and gave water and support to the walkers, who smiled and waved back despite the early morning heat and humidity.
“We had a wonderful turnout,” said Edwin Smith, Air Serv’s Vice President of Transportation who lives in Memphis, an Airserv manager in Memphis, “Over fifty employees came out in support and we raised over a thousand dollars in donations. Everyone had a really great time and it was all in the name of a wonderful cause, especially since most people have either a family member or a friend affected with heart disease.” Led by team members Chris Lawerence, Gregory Weathers, Jimmy Patmon, Joseph Mitchell, Leon Yarbrough and Tom Bush, Airserv helped raise close to a third of their goal of $12,000 dollars in a single weekend. Once the donations are complete, Airserv will present the American Heart Association (AHA) with a check. The AHA is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to preventing heart disease. If you would like to help Team Airserv reach their goal, please donate online at http://memphisheartwalk.kintera.org
The American Heart Association, the largest voluntary health organization working to prevent heart disease, agrees with this bleak assessment. Every year, heart-related diseases devastate millions of people of all ages and kill more than 930,000 Americans each year, making heart disease the number one killer in the United States. HeartWalks, the brainchild of the American Heart Association, held all across the country throughout the year. “We’re just glad we could do our part,” said Smith, adding that Airserv was just one team out our of hundreds contributing to the walk. When asked if Airserv would be walking in the next year’s Heartwalk, Smith replied, “Definitely, you’ll see us out there.”
